Bad Fans

I need to preface this post with a disclaimer saying that I have nothing against this gentleman.
(That's Riley Nelson with the long hair for those of you not on the up-and-up with BYU football players).

I mean really, did you even read my last post about football?  Clearly I have nothing against him.  Also, in the game last night he ROCKED IT OUT.  We owe a lot of the credit for our last minute victory to Riley and his willingness to take a hit and ability to think on his feet.  He's a great quarterback.  Ok, disclaimer over.

People need to shut the hell up about Jake Heaps.  First of all, he's a tiny infant child (meaning, he's extremely young) and gets flustered.  We wish he wouldn't, but it happens.  I got distracted, I need to get back to the point.

Stop being crap fans.  Don't chant for Riley when Jake is in.  Honestly, do you think that improves his game play?   I'm sure your performance would improve if the people who are supposed to be on your side are cheering against you.  Also, never boo your own team (didn't happen at this game, but it did against UCF).  Every time the lousy fans decided it was a good idea to chant "Riley Riley" I was filled with rage.  If you're a good fan support your team NO MATTER WHAT.  Even though I think Heaps has it in him, do I cheer against Nelson?  No, I cheer for whoever the coaches decide to put in.  I feel so bad for Jake.  When you can get out there and do better then you are welcome to talk bad about him all you want.

I know some of my friends and not just acquaintances are guilty of the Jake hate and especially of Riley worship (dear Provo, he's not the second-coming).  Perhaps this post offends you.  I don't care.  Perhaps you feel this is a direct attack on you.  It probably is.  It's not pointed at one particular person, but it is pointed.

Rant over.

Let Me Introduce You

Let me introduce you to someone.  This is Riley Nelson.

Oh yes, hello.  Could you please go back to this haircut?  Thanks.

Riley is backup quarterback for BYU.  Tonight he rocked out a trick play that was BEAUTIFUL.  Not the point of this post.  Moving on.

Looky, even though baby Jakey took his job they are nicey nice to each other (I have nothing against baby Jakey, by the way).

Right now he's grown his hair out long.  I prefer it short, but it's growing at me.  He seems to keep it clean.  Still, not the point of the post.

Want to hear a little known fact about good old Riley Nelson?  Let's talk about what Riley wears under his football pants.  Is it A) Underarmor shorts B) briefs C) athletic shorts D) nothing.

Did you choose an answer?

If you chose D you are right!  Our seats being on the third row and all we see the team up close and personal and let me tell you, you can see RIGHT through those white pants and you can tell that Riley is all skin color under there.

Also, you can see the whatever the leg strap parts are called on his jock strap.  That part's not my favorite.

Is it bad that I don't mind my view much?  In fact, I really like it.  At the Utah game the most interesting thing on the field was Riley Nelson's backside.

Men look good in football pants.  Riley looks especially good in football pants.  Riley apparently has something against underclothing.

I'll stop there.  I promised Sarah I would try to keep this post relatively tame because her mom reads my blog.

P.S. New football love?  Daniel Sorensen.  Yum.

Fantastic Times

Good things that have happened:
  • BYU vs. USU basketball game. Despite the fact that their fans were kind of rude there, we pulled out the win and it was a fun, intense game.
  • Waiting in line for an watching Harry Potter with Sarah, Britt, Kyle, and Caroline. Freaking great. Want to watch again (Sarah? Britt? anyone else in?). I think I secretly love waiting in line for long periods of time. It's kind of fun (when you have other people to be with you).
  • Opening of graduation present: SARAH AND I ARE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD AND THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER! Five nights and six days between the two parks and we get to pick the dates. I'm so stoked. Thanks to all who made this possible (I'm not positive who all is involved but I think Laurel came up with the idea and both sets of parents contributed).
  • Craft night with Britt and Sarah (we made candle holders and ornaments. They are lovely and crafting is so soothing).
  • BYU vs. New Mexico football game. We basically trashed them and somehow ended up with front row seats for most of the last quarter which was awesome and I loved it and next is the Utah game. I'll admit that I was complaining for awhile because I was freezing to death.
  • SDSU nearly beat Utah. We killed SDSU. WE HAVE A CHANCE! I just need the Cougars to play well next weekend.
  • Right after the football game was a basketball game against the Chicago State Cougars. Our seats weren't great, but we completely destroyed them. I was impressed when some of our fans started clapping for the other team's good plays. Way to be classy.
  • I started decorating for Christmas today! So far I have my tree up and a bell mural thing on my wall and some tinsel garland and one of the twins put up a nativity. We'll see what else I can pull out in the next couple days. Love it.
  • Soon is Thanksgiving. I haven't decided what I'm doing yet, but I get a break. Yes!

The Weekend in Review

The good:

1. Thursday: Inception with Sarah, Vampire Diaries with Sarah, and watching the Backstreet Boys on Oprah (TiVo'd so we didn't have to watch the whole episode).
2. Basketball vs. BYU-Hawaii (exhibition game) in which we dominated and had a grand old time and of course saw our dang awesome team and got stoked for the season (except Jackson Emery didn't play which was sad).

3. Eating some of these with Sarah and Mike.

4. Watching That Thing You Do (ok, so I slept through half because I was tired).

5. Dang awesome football game vs. UNLV on Saturday including seats all the way at the top of the east bleachers and completely dominating UNLV (55 - 7).
(picture stolen from Sarah)
6. Productive time before getting ready and going to wait in line.
(picture stolen from Sarah)
7. For Divine Comedy with Sarah, Britt, and Kyle! (which was hilarious I think).

The bad:

1. The Colts lost to the Eagles today.

2. Probably because of this. :(

Football Fight

Today the BYU v FSU game was on some crap network (ESPN-U) that no one really gets around here unless they pay for a sports package. So BYUSA teamed up with Cougar United to hold a party in the Wilk (the student building with the food court and stuff for those of you that don't go to BYU) for people to gather and watch the game. There was some hot dogs and lemonade and a ton of people and a big screen and happiness. Problem is, there was this one FSU fan. Homeboy was being pretty obnoxious and standing to clap while the rest of us were sad when BYU was not doing so hot. May I just remind you that this was on the BYU campus? Yeah, what a jerk. Shortly thereafter BYU made some great play and people pointed and hollered at the FSU fan and one BYU fan ran up and yelled something really close to the douche. Well, Mr. Idiot FSU fan decided to stand up and do a little chest push on harmless, but celebratory BYU guy. Event staff came over as the two guys yelled at each other and a little bit more pushing happened. The whole ballroom full of people stopped watching the game and started watching for a fight. I hoped someone would throw a punch because, hey, who doesn't like a good fight? It all simmered down, though event staff stayed close to those two guys.

Oh, and we did lose. It was pretty sad.

On a happier note this is hilarious to me. STRONG LANGUAGE WARNING! I did warn you. I know some of you that read this are good nice people that aren't so wicked as I am.

Sidenote: miss him.

Baby Tori and Etc.

My sister had her baby and she is lovely (at least as lovely as a newborn can be). Her name is Tori (Victoria) and she's quite short and chunky.
Vampire Diaries is back. Oh Stefan, how I have missed thee and thy hot jawline.
School is kicking my butt. It seems like I'm never on top of everything I need to be.
Marci's 21st birthday party got shut down by the police. Apparently we were too noisy. What kind of college town is this when people complain at 11pm on a Friday night about noise?
BYU basketball is my new favorite part of life. We did lose to New Mexico which was very sad, but the Utah game is this weekend and we're going to kick trash.
Last Monday for FHE we went to my friend's orchard and made apple juice. Oh my gosh it is the most delicious thing. If you think you've had fresher or more pure apple juice, you haven't. It was a pretty neat process and we miraculously got the guys to do most of the grunt work. Everyone that went (11 people) took home a gallon of juice and then we got free apples. In celebration of apples I had a pie-making party the next night. We made 8 pies and had a grand old time. I also discovered that if you mention the word pie to your guy friends they will come over until all hours of the night after your bedtime and devour pie. It's alright though because I like them.
The Super Bowl is soon. I'm so so excited. Go Colts.

I Promised Pictures

Yesterday I said I'd post pictures of the game so without further ado, here they are. Note: they are in reverse order because that's how they uploaded. Deal.

Me with Brian Karya who is one of my new favorite players (new meaning this year).

This is the four of us with Jacobson. He's kind of a big deal. And I love those tiny hats. And I love that we played in throwback royal blue jerseys.

The scoreboard doesn't lie and according to the scoreboard BYU wins! It was an amazing game that went into overtime.

Caroline, Sarah, and I when we rushed the field. There was a lot of touching going on. Please notice my awesome war paint.
The beginning of the game was sunny and Sarah and I are fierce.
Enjoy. P.S. I'm now going to decorate my house for Christmas. Hooray!

Proud to be a Cougar

I think my blog posts possibly resolve quite a bit around sports. I don't care because I love sports. So, as I mentioned in my last post, today was the BYU vs. Utah, Holy War, football game. It was absolutely amazing. I'll stay away from the nitty gritty details of who was up and who was down when. We went into overtime. Utah scored their fieldgoal and we scored a touchdown on a pass from Max Hall (15) to Andrew George (88). It was phenomenal and we stormed the field and had a big fat good time. Here's a lovely picture of George.
Oh, and by the way we played in royal blue tonight as a throw back to the 1984 team that won the national championship. It was quite lovely.

Now, a slightly serious matter. After the game, Max Hall made some comments that he shouldn't have and opened his mouth when he should have shut it. The article is pretty thorough about what he said. Hall should have thought before he made those comments, but it's no surprise that the Cougars hate the Utes. Not to mention the fact that if someone dumped beer on my family (he mentions this in the article) I would have said way worse things about the other team and their degree of class.

My real issue comes with a friend of mine (a BYU fan) who posted a status on facebook that said "Max Hall is trash" and then in a comment afterwards said maybe next year he would become a Utah fan. To him I say good riddance. We don't need any untrue and unblue fans hanging around taking up space. I've always been a fan of stand by your man and can honestly say that I've been a fan of Max Hall and supported him and the team through and through.

Watch tomorrow for a post with my pictures from the game (and not much else).

Dear Poser Girl...

Dear Poser Girl,
Why are you loud at the basketball game when you nothing about what's going on? Simply repeating what other people are yelling (but much louder) does not make people think that you understand the game. I think it's great if you want to come to the game and learn to understand it, but until you do ask someone what's happening and shut your mouth.

Dear Obnoxious Guy Who Brought Poser Girl,
Cut back on the personal attacks, will you? I will admit I think the occasional remark to the other team is hilarious, but no need for that on every play. Have a little class.

Dear Girl Playing a Racing Game on iPhone at the Game,
Why did you even come? If you have no interest in the game then there's no reason to show up and take up space someone else could be using.

Dear People Wearing Red to the Game Last Night,
What the heck are you thinking? It's the Holy War* today and we have to support our team. Red in any form is simply not acceptable this week, especially the night before the game! When you show up to a game, wear the team colors (except under extenuating circumstances like a car accident immediately before so you couldn't go home and change)!

*To those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, there is a huge rivalry between BYU and the University of Utah known as the Holy War. Today we, BYU, play our annual football game against them. BYU is blue, and Utah is red. That is why red is completely unacceptable.

I Love BYU Sports But...

Last weekend was the men's basketball season (home) opener. I went to dinner with Ashley and Tresa and we headed up to the Marriot Center for the game. We quickly found some pretty decent seats, but soon noticed these weird laminated fliers on the benches. Some marked the two outside seats on every other row for the "Spirit Squad." (Spirit Squad tangent: I think that's dumb. It's the combination of the co-ed cheer squad, the all girls cheer squad, and the cougarettes (the dance team). I hate the cougarettes already on principle, but why do we need an all female cheer squad? I only think this is acceptable if they are recieving athletic scholarships that allow us to have more male athletes because of title IX. Also, why do all of these things need to be combined together? Moving on.) Then some other fliers were floating around all over with people reading them and then passing on. I stole one and took a picture of it. This is what it looks like (if it is too small to read, just click).

At first glance, no big deal. I figured it was not a terrible idea to let people know the schedule of the pre (and even post) game events, though it was a little unneccessary. What really bothers me is the assigned actions for cheering during the introductions and game. I didn't grow up near BYU or watching BYU sports. When I came here as a freshman I had no idea what to expect or what to do at sporting events. But now, after having attended many I know what to do when the band plays the imperial march at football games. I know when to chant 'you got swatted' at basketball games and to keep at it everytime that player has the ball at least for the half. I know that when we kick off in a football we get louder as our player runs towards the ball and then get a little quieter with our yell as the ball falls. I know these things because I've attended events and I've learned. I wasn't given any special tutorial or magical handbook (or laminated flier) to tell me what to do. I learned the old fashioned way, by being around other real fans that know what to do. This takes the magic out of the crowd and fans and being there all together united in one cause - your team's cause.

Sports Junkie

I am becoming a sports junkie. It's really kind of a problem. Now that I think about it, this may have started during the summer when I was watching the olympics. I watched almost every Michael Phelps race, of course. That wasn't all, though. I watched track and field events, gymnastics, diving, women's swimming, and volleyball. I was hooked! That kind of let off at the end of the summer, but I'm not sure the idea faded completely.

Starting this football season, I've gotten really into it. I've watched most of the away games and paid very close attention to the home games. I am working on learning more specific rules and how and why they work the way they do. I have learned the names and numbers on the football team and what positions they play. I even have come to recognize a few specific plays.

Then I started watching women's soccer. I'll go ahead and admit that I came in late in the season and not purely for the love of the sport (but that's a whole different story). Now, though, I'm once again learning what some of the plays now and felt truly sad when we lost to number 10 USC in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Basketball season just opened here at BYU and I'm already loving it. It's a fun game to get into. I'm getting down some of the names already. There's Lee Cummard (definitely our all-star for the home opener and number 30), Jonathan Tavernari (number 45, pretty much a stud, and who I have secretly nicknamed J-tav), Jimmer Fredette (somehow I've forgotten his number), Chris Miles (number 54, he's in my mythology class), and others who I can't think of at this exact moment. I have this year's poster on the wall by my bed. I love it.

I'm not saying I already know everything, but I'm learning and this is definitely a love I don't see going away anytime soon. Not to mention the fact that I've been having this strange desire to play touch football. I know, I'm freaking myself out too.
